Cedar Roofing in Idaho

The warmth and beauty of a natural cedar shake or shingle roof goes beyond enhancing the appearance of your home. It reflects pride of ownership and, most important, it shows an intelligent sense of value. Cedar shakes and shingles have a special warmth and elegance, an architectural look that states classic quality, taste and timelessness.

No other roofing and siding product offers nature's own formula for unrivaled weather-defying protection, insulation and structural strength. Cedar is impact resistant, wind resistant and can also be factory treated with preservatives to enhance its natural resistance to decay and fire-retardant treatment to aid in protecting your home against fire.

Cedar roof shingles and shakes are harvested and milled on a per-order basis. Robison Roofing works closely with Cedarwood Products of Eugene, Oregon to deliver the best product for your application.

FEATURED PROJECT

In 2007, Robison Roofing was recruited by Eagle Rock Timber, National Park Service, and the U.S. Dept. of Interior to help restore the beautiful Inn at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. Originally built in 1903-04, the inn is on the National Registry of Historic Places, so we had to work under the most strict requirements and deadlines. No problem! We re-roofed the east and west wings, approximately 33,000 square feet, with Cedarwood cedar shingles manufactured in nearby Oregon.

FAQ

Are cedar shakes and shingles better for the environment?

As a natural product, cedar shakes, shingles and siding has a far lower impact on the environment than other building products such as concrete siding or asphalt roofing.

Only wood benefits the environment while it grows, is completely renewable and has a far lower impact on air and water quality.

What is the difference between a shake and shingle?
Generally, a shingle is sawn on both sides and is thinner at the butt than a shake. A shake is typically split on one or both sides. There are important exceptions to this, (eg. tapersawn shakes = shakes sawn on both sides) depending on the specific manufacturing method and the dimensions of a specific product.

Shakes are still manufactured by hand, but most are now made using powered equipment by taking the wood straight split from the block, and sawing it end-to-end at an angle. This creates a shake which is sawn on one side and split on the other, often called a "handsplit and resawn" product.

Shingles are always sawn on both sides from a block of cedar. Most shingles are manufactured using a stationary, upright saw. The block of cedar is moved through the path of the saw by a device called a carriage.

How long does a cedar roof last?

The longevity of a roof depends on many things: the grade and quality of the product used, the quality of the application, climate, salt-water proximity, exposure, and maintenance. The average life span of a cedar roof in Idaho and surrounding region is approximately 30 - 40 years.

Is cedar a fire hazard?

With changes in building codes cedar shakes and shingles must pass more rigorous fire tests than composite materials (test established for National Building Codes). For over a decade, pressure-treated, fire-retardant shakes and shingle have helped set the standard in fire resistance.

What kind of maintenance is required?

Even though cedar is very durable, it's life can be greatly extended with a regular application of a protective coating. Options include clear stains, or if you prefer color applying either a transparent oil stain or a high quality latex paint.

Can PVC roofs be repaired?

The characteristics of PVC "vinyl" roofs are such that, even after years of field service and exposure to the elements, repairs and/or modifications can be accomplished with ease and with the expectation of long-term performance.
